When My Child Has Died

InterdenominationalGrief and Loss

Full Text

Father of all compassion, My child has died. These words feel impossible to speak, yet they describe the unbearable reality before me. A life I loved, protected, encouraged, and carried in my heart is no longer present in the way I long for it to be. This death has torn through the order I expected life to follow. I am grieving my child's presence, voice, personality, possibilities, and place within our family. I am also grieving the future I imagined—the conversations, celebrations, ordinary days, and years we will not share as I had hoped. Lord, do not ask me to pretend that this loss is small. Do not let anyone pressure me to explain it, overcome it quickly, or cover it with easy words. Death is not good, and this separation is not what love desires. Jesus, You welcomed children and blessed them. You wept beside the grave of someone You loved. Sit with me now in this sorrow. Receive the cries I can express and the anguish for which I have no language. When guilt and unanswered questions torment me, lead me toward truth and mercy. Show me what is mine to acknowledge, what is mine to release, and what I must entrust to You. Protect me from condemning myself for being unable to control what no human being could control. Help our family grieve with patience and tenderness. Draw near to siblings, grandparents, relatives, and friends who also feel this absence. Do not allow our different ways of mourning to divide us. Teach us to make room for one another's tears, silence, anger, memories, and needs. Help me speak my child's name. Help me remember without being destroyed by remembering. Preserve the stories, laughter, qualities, and love that made this life irreplaceable. On the days when getting out of bed feels impossible, give me strength for the next breath and the next necessary thing. Send people who will remain when the first weeks have passed and the world seems to expect me to return to normal. Holy Spirit, hold me when I cannot hold myself. Guard me from isolation and despair. When I cannot perceive hope, keep hope alive for me. I entrust my child to Your unfailing mercy and love. I entrust my broken heart and unfinished life to You. Carry me until the day when death is no more, every tear is wiped away, and all things are made new. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Jeremiah 31:15–17

"This is what the Lord says: 'A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.' This is what the Lord says: 'Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded,' declares the Lord. 'They will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your descendants,' declares the Lord."

Mark 10:13–16

"People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them."

John 11:32–36

"When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 'Where have you laid him?' he asked. 'Come and see, Lord,' they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, 'See how he loved him!'"

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Revelation 21:4–5

"'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!' Then he said, 'Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.'"
