Lord, I thought we were done. I thought the worst was behind me. And now the cancer is back — or it has spread — and I am standing in a place I did not want to return to. I am angry. I am exhausted. I am afraid in a way that is different from the first time, because now I know what this costs. I do not have easy words for this prayer. I only have the truth: I need You. I need You to be real. I need You to be present. I need You to be more than a comfort I have talked myself into. Be God to me in this. Not a distant God who watches from a safe distance, but the God who enters the suffering — who sat with the dying, who wept at the tomb, who knows what it is to face death and not look away. Be that God to me now.
