Prayers for

Grief and Loss

Grief is not the absence of faith. It is faith honest enough to feel the weight of what has been lost. These prayers give language to sorrow — and bring it before the God who is close to the brokenhearted.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Psalm 34:18

Praying Through Grief and Loss

The Bible does not tell us to grieve less. It tells us we do not grieve as those who have no hope. There is a difference. Grief is the honest response to real loss — the death of someone loved, the end of a marriage, the loss of a dream, the slow grief of a relationship that has broken. These prayers do not rush past the pain. They sit in it, bring it to God, and trust that He who wept at Lazarus's tomb is present in every moment of mourning.

Prayers

In the First Hours of Loss

God, I don't have words. I only have this grief. I bring it to you because I have nowhere else to go. You know what has been lost. You know what this feels like. Be near to me now — not with explanations, but with your presence. Hold me. Let me feel that I am not alone in this. Amen.

Psalm 34:18Evangelical

A Prayer of Lament

Lord, I am angry and I am sad and I do not understand. I know you are good. I know you are sovereign. But right now I am in pain, and I need to say that honestly before you. I do not want to pretend. I do not want to perform faith I do not feel. Receive my lament. Receive my tears. You are big enough for this. Amen.

Psalm 22:1–2Reformed

When Grief Returns Unexpectedly

Father, I thought I was doing better. And then grief came back — a song, a smell, a date on the calendar. I was not ready. I am not sure I will ever be fully ready. But I know you are with me in this wave as you were in the first one. Carry me through. Remind me that grief and hope can coexist. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:13Evangelical

For Those Who Mourn the Death of a Loved One

Lord Jesus, you are the resurrection and the life. I hold onto that truth today, even when it feels far away. I grieve the loss of [name]. I miss them. I will keep missing them. But I trust that death does not have the final word — that you do. Comfort everyone who loved them. Give us hope that is not wishful thinking but a living certainty. Amen.

John 11:25–26Evangelical
