This Friendship Was Real, and My Grief Is Valid

InterdenominationalGrief and Loss

Full Text

This friendship was real, and my grief is valid. I do not need a biological relationship, legal status, or official family role for this loss to matter. A close friend can become chosen family, a trusted witness to life, and a source of belonging that cannot be measured by a family tree. My friend knew parts of me that others may not know. We shared memories, confidences, humor, experiences, disappointments, and hopes that belonged uniquely to our relationship. I am allowed to grieve the ordinary things: the call I can no longer make, the message that will not receive a reply, the chair that will remain empty, and the plans that will never happen as we imagined. If other people underestimate this loss, their misunderstanding does not diminish its significance. I can seek support from those who will recognize the depth of faithful friendship. I can honor my friend's family and their grief without making my own grief invisible. Love is not a competition, and sorrow does not have to be ranked before it can be treated with compassion. If our friendship contained disappointments, distance, or unfinished conversations, I can acknowledge them honestly. A relationship does not have to have been perfect to have been precious. I will not condemn myself endlessly for words I did not say, calls I did not make, or moments I wish I could relive. I can learn from regret, receive mercy for my limitations, and allow gratitude to stand beside sorrow. No one can replace this friend, but this does not mean I must close myself to future friendship. Loving other people will not betray the person I lost. The wisdom, encouragement, honesty, and love I received can continue to bear fruit in my life. I can honor my friend by becoming more present, loyal, truthful, and compassionate toward others. God sees this friendship and sees my grief. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and He is near to me now. This friendship was real. My grief is valid. The love we shared remains part of my life, and hope can gradually rise again.

Scripture References

1 Samuel 18:1–3

"After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself."

Proverbs 17:17

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity."

Psalm 34:18

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

John 15:13–15

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

Romans 12:15

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."

Romans 8:38–39

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
