My Sibling's Life and Our Shared Story Matter
Full Text
My sibling's life mattered, and my grief matters too. The loss of a brother or sister can be overlooked when attention is directed toward parents, spouses, or children. I do not have to minimize my sorrow because other people are also grieving. My sibling and I shared a history that cannot be recreated. We knew many of the same people, places, family traditions, struggles, and beginnings. Even when we remembered them differently, we were witnesses to parts of each other's lives that no one else saw. If we were close, I can grieve the companionship, trust, laughter, and future we expected to share. If we were distant or estranged, I can grieve what happened, what never developed, and what can no longer be repaired in the way I once imagined. Mixed emotions do not invalidate my grief. Love, anger, gratitude, regret, relief, and longing may all be present. I can bring each of them honestly before God. I am not required to idealize my sibling or erase the difficult parts of our relationship. I can honor what was good, acknowledge what was painful, and entrust what remains unfinished to the mercy of God. My place within the family may now feel different. Responsibilities may shift, and familiar gatherings may feel incomplete. I can take time to understand these changes without assuming that I must immediately fill the space my sibling occupied. I can support my grieving family without abandoning my own needs. Compassion for my parents, my sibling's spouse, children, or friends does not require me to suppress my sorrow. If I am now the only surviving sibling, I can face that loneliness and vulnerability with honesty. I am not abandoned. God remains present, and I can build relationships of trust and belonging in the life before me. Remembering my sibling does not prevent healing. Healing does not erase our bond. I can carry forward the stories, qualities, lessons, and love that deserve to continue. My sibling's life mattered. Our shared story matters. My grief will be honored, and hope can gradually rise again.
