Grace for the Long Goodbye

InterdenominationalGrief and Loss

Full Text

Faithful Shepherd, I am grieving someone who is still here. Each change feels like another goodbye, and I live between gratitude for this day and fear of the day that is coming. Give me grace for this long goodbye. Help me be present without demanding that every moment become profound. Let ordinary love be enough: a hand held, a story repeated, a room quietly shared, a practical need met. Show me when to speak, when to listen, when to ask for help, and when to rest. Release me from the impossible burden of making every decision perfectly. Give wisdom to caregivers, clinicians, family members, and spiritual guides. Let comfort, dignity, truth, and love shape the care we provide. Where reconciliation is needed and possible, make a way for honest words. Where words can no longer be spoken, receive what remains unfinished into Your mercy. Be close to the one I love. Be close to me. Walk with us through the valley we did not choose, and keep us within Your faithful care. Amen.
